The Gray Book, formerly known as the The Book of Gramarye is a tome of marks and runes that Nephilim can use in the bestselling Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare.

Contents[]

The book contains an exact replica of the Book of the Covenant with inscribed runes or marks that the Shadowhunters are permitted to use. This book requires special paper to withstand the power of the runes. Ironically, the book is green, not gray.

Role in Story[]

The Gray book was mentioned in City of Bones and the Shadowhunters Codex There are only a few copies of the book, as each has to be specially made by Silent Brothers. The High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane, and every Institute each have their own copy of the book.

All Shadowhunters must learn the runes from this book. However, each person must only read one rune from the book because it could cause severe headaches.

Related Real-world Books[]

This book contains a replica of the Book of the Covenant. Otherwise known as the Covenant Code, is the name given by academics to a text appearing in the Torah at Exodus 20:19–23:33. Biblically, the text is the second of the law codes given to Moses by God at Mount Sinai. This legal text provides a small, but substantive proportion of the mitzvot within the Torah, and hence is a source of Jewish Law.
